The Effect of Protein Length on the Ploidy Level and Environmental Tolerance of Organisms

چکیده

This paper summarizes previous work linking protein aggregation to the heterozygosity of organisms. It also cites the literature showing a correlation between species' morphological complexity and the lengths of their proteins. These two findings are combined to form a theory that may potentially explain the ploidy levels of organisms. Organisms can employ heterozygosity to inhibit protein aggregation. Hence, complex organisms tend to be diploid because they tend to synthesize long, aggregation-prone proteins. On the other hand, simple organisms tend to be haploid because they synthesize short proteins that are less prone to aggregation. The theory may also explain ecological trends associated with organisms of different ploidy level. Two mathematical models are also developed that may explain: 1) how protein aggregation results in truncation selection that maintains numerous polymorphisms in natural populations, and 2) the relationship between protein turnover, metabolic efficiency, and heterosis. 1 Department of Crop and Soil Sciences, 3111 Miller Plant Sciences Building, University of Georgia, Athens, GA 30602 2 Email: [email protected] 1

The Feasibility Study on the Prediction of Ploidy Levels Base on Pollen Dimensions in Rosa

Ploidy level is one of important factors for plant breeders; therefore models that can predict it are very practical. To estimate of ploidy levels in some species, hybrids and cultivars of Rosa, dimensions of over 500 pollens include pollen length, width and area measured at ABRII. The calculations were carried out in several stages. First, Ploidy levels were regressed with pollen dimensions, a...

Investigation of the Effect of Salinity and Drought Stress on Germination Characteristics of Strangle Wort (Cynanchum acutum) Seeds

DOR: 98.1000/2383-1251.1398.6.1.11.1. 1575.41 Extended Abstract Introduction: Strangle wort (Cynanchum acutum) is a perennial weed that could be propagated by seeds and vegetative organs. This brings about harvesting problems for some crops such as cotton, sugar beet, wheat and maize. In recent years, this weed has caused huge losses in sugar cane fields. The role of environmental condition...

اثر القای پلی پلوئیدی بر برخی از پارامتر های رشد در گیاه شاهدانه (Cannabis sativa L.)

In this study, Cannabis plants with different ploidy levels were compared in some growth and biochemical parameters. Tetraploid and mixoploid plants were achieved from previous experiment. Flow cytometry analysis was used to confirm the ploidy level. As a result, root and shoot fresh weight showed a significant increase in tetraploid plants compared to the diploid ones. Chimers showed a sig...

Determination of Aluminum Stress Tolerance Threshold During Seed Germination of Wheat

Environmental stresses are the most important factors that reduce plant growth in stages of development. The presence of aluminum in acidic soils as an environmental stress has an impact on different parts of the plant and reduces root growth, water absorption and nutrients and increases susceptibility to drought.  In order to evaluate the effect of aluminum stress levels on wheat at germinatio...

The effect of salinity pretreatment of Glomus mosseae on induction of salinity tolerance in Lycopersicum esculentum L.

Tomato (Lycpoersicum esculemtum) belongs to the Solanaceae potato family and is an important crop plant. It is relatively resistant to salinity, but in the saline environment growth and production of the plant significantly reduces. On the other hand, the presence of mycorrhiza fungus can improve the adverse effects of salinity. A factorial experiment in a completely randomized design with thre...
